If you’re planning a trip to Japan in the fall, the Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival is an absolute must-see. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Lake Kawaguchi and Mount Fuji, this festival offers one of the most picturesque autumn experiences in the country. With vibrant red maple leaves (momiji) creating a stunning contrast against the snow-capped peak of Mt. Fuji, it’s no wonder visitors flock here to capture this seasonal beauty.

What is the Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival?
Held annually along the shores of Lake Kawaguchi, the Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival (富士河口湖紅葉祭り) celebrates the beauty of Japan’s autumn foliage. From late October to late November, the festival transforms the Maple Corridor (Momiji Kairo) into a magical autumn wonderland with rows of bright red and yellow maple trees, especially stunning when lit up at night.

Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival 2024
For 2024, the Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival is set to run from October 26th to November 20th. The Maple Corridor will be illuminated daily from sunset until 9:30 PM, creating the perfect opportunity to enjoy both day and night views of the autumn leaves.
Where to Take Fall Foliage Photos
Maple Corridor (Momiji Kairo)
The main attraction of the Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival is the Maple Corridor, where two rows of maple trees form a natural archway of autumn hues. The pathway, although short, offers endless photo opportunities. The illuminated night view is particularly popular, drawing photographers eager to capture the leaves glowing under soft lights.
Pro Tip: The small bridge at the end of the corridor offers one of the best vantage points for photos. If you continue walking beyond the bridge, you’ll reach a path where you can photograph Mt. Fuji framed by fiery autumn leaves—a classic shot.
Around Lake Kawaguchi
If you’re looking for a quieter spot to take photos, consider the shores of Lake Kawaguchi. There are plenty of vantage points where you can capture both the autumn leaves and Mt. Fuji in the same frame. Some of these spots are less crowded than the Maple Corridor, making them ideal for more personal, serene shots.
Insider Tip: Head to the north shore for a wide-angle view of Mt. Fuji reflecting in the lake, with colorful leaves in the foreground.
If you’re looking to take portraits with fall foliage in the background, the Maple Corridor is not ideal because it can get crowded. There are plenty of spots with fall foliage around the area, and my advice is to find a quieter spot.
In my opinion, the Maple Corridor is enough for all your photo needs. If you want to check out other viewing/photography spots, however, this page lists a few more.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
Although the festival dates are set from late October to late November, the peak time for autumn foliage at Lake Kawaguchi usually falls around mid-November. The timing can vary based on the weather, so it’s best to check current forecasts before your trip. Check Google Maps reviews and sort by latest to see photos updated in real time.

How to Get to Lake Kawaguchi from Tokyo
By Bus (Cheaper Option)
For budget travelers, taking a bus from Tokyo is the most economical way to reach Lake Kawaguchi. A round trip costs about ¥4,000 and takes around 2-3 hours. However, due to heavy traffic during peak season, delays are possible. Be sure to book your tickets in advance, especially during the festival dates.
By Train (Faster Option)
For a faster option, take the Fuji Excursion Train from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Station. This special service gets you there in under 2 hours for around ¥4,060. Alternatively, you can use the JR Pass to travel to Otsuki Station, and from there, transfer to the Fujikyu Line (not covered by the JR Pass) to reach Kawaguchiko.
