When it comes to beauty and relaxation services, Japan does not disappoint. If you want to get a haircut, get your nails done, or get a massage, there are plenty of places to choose from. More often than not, however, walk-ins are not accepted and making a reservation is a must. Reservations can usually be done by phone or online. In my case, I use a website/app called “Hot Pepper Beauty.” This service allows me to browse listed salons and look for them by area, service, or keyword. If I’m in a hurry to get something done, I can also search for salons that have open slots for the same or the following day.

Needless to say, it is a very useful website. It’s unfortunately not (yet?) in English, but have no fear. The instructions below take you through creating an account.

01. Go to the Hot Pepper Beauty website (or app).

02. On the right side of the page, click “会員登録” (kai’in tōroku; register).

3. Input your e-mail address. Click the button at the bottom.

4. This will send a link to the e-mail you registered. Verify by clicking the link provided in the e-mail.

5. Fill out the registration form with your information. Translations are provided below.

Under the “Name” field, you can input the first set of names in romaji. The second set should be typed in katakana.

Tick the boxes according to your preferences. Hot Pepper Beauty belongs to Recruit Lifestyle, a company that provides several internet-based services, such as Hot Pepper Gourmet (for restaurant reservations) and Jalan (travel services). If you want to receive news about the various services Recruit Lifestyle offers, tick the first box in the Newsletter row. If you want to receive news and updates from Hot Pepper Beauty alone, tick the second box. In my case, I’ve unchecked both.

After filling out the form, click the lowermost button. This will take you to the confirmation page.

6. Check if all the recorded information is correct, and then click the button at the bottom of the page.

Congratulations! You now have a Hot Pepper Beauty account. You can now look for salons and make reservations.
