Okay, I know your heart’s set on Kyoto. You’ve seen the gorgeous Instagram photos, the eye-catching reels. Everybody who goes to Japan includes Kyoto on their bucket list, so it’s only natural that you do, right? The question is, are you prepared for the crowds?
What if I told you there’s a city just three hours from Tokyo that offers all the charm of Kyoto—but with fewer tourists? Welcome to Kanazawa, a hidden gem that’s brimming with samurai history, thriving geisha culture, and some of the best seafood you’ll find in Japan. Known as “Little Kyoto,” Kanazawa has everything from beautifully preserved Edo-period districts to cutting-edge art installations. It’s like stepping into a time machine with a modern twist.
In my latest YouTube video, I spent three packed days exploring this city’s treasures. I feasted on nodoguro sushi at Omicho Market (a must-try if you love seafood), wandered through serene gardens and historic samurai neighborhoods, and even uncovered quirky spots like a ninja-themed shrine. Oh, and did I mention gold leaf ice cream? Kanazawa produces nearly all of Japan’s gold leaf, so it only makes sense to taste a bit of luxury!
If you’re curious about what makes Kanazawa so special—and whether it might be the perfect alternative to Kyoto—grab a cup of tea and check out the video. I promise, by the end, you’ll be Googling how to get there.
