Hirami Pan: A Retro-Chic Breakfast & Brunch Gem in Kanazawa

As someone who has no time for breakfast on a regular weekday, having a leisurely breakfast is one of my musts when I’m on vacation. Enter Hirami Pan—the kind of place that makes you forget about alarms, commutes, and convenience store coffee. The moment I stepped inside, I felt instantly relaxed. Something about the warm lighting, vintage wallpaper (yes, I took selfies), and the smell of fresh bread made me feel at home.

What is Hirami Pan?

Hirami Pan Sign

Hirami Pan (ひらみぱん) is a French-Japanese bakery and bistro tucked away on Seseragi Street in Kanazawa’s historic Nagamachi area. It’s housed in a renovated Taishō-era ironworks building, so you get this cool mix of vintage industrial details and cozy bistro charm. Think: the romance of a Parisian café meets the craftsmanship of Japanese baking.

Inside, there’s a tempting display of bread and pastries to take away, but the real magic happens when you sit down and order one of their breakfast or lunch sets.

A Brief History

Hirami Pan Interior

Hirami Pan opened in March 2011, transforming what was once a Taishō-era ironworks into a warm, retro-inspired bakery and bistro. The space retains hints of its industrial past—exposed beams, high ceilings—but layers it with vintage furniture, patterned wallpaper, and soft lighting. Over the years, it has evolved from a small bakery into a beloved local institution, known for blending French baking traditions with Japanese sensibilities. Its location near the Nagamachi Samurai District adds another layer of history, making it not just a place to eat but a way to connect with Kanazawa’s heritage.

Why This Café is Worth Visiting

Hirami Pan Decor

This café invites you to slow down and savor the moment. You come for the food, but you stay for the atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where:

  • The smell of butter and coffee greets you before the staff do.
  • The walls, mismatched furniture, and vintage décor add to its timeless charm.
  • You might spot locals popping in for their morning bread while visitors linger over their pastries and coffee, soaking in the atmosphere.

One word of advice: Hirami Pan is small. When I visited, about 20+ Italian tourists suddenly walked in, and it was chaos. Staff had to juggle takeout orders, queues, and language barriers. It took a while for people to pay because of the rush. Moral of the story? This café isn’t built for big groups, so if you’re traveling in one, maybe split up or find a spot that can accommodate everyone comfortably.

What to Try

Avocado Toast with Dukkah

When I visited, I ordered the Avocado Toast with Dukkah Set as one of the breakfast set options and loved it. The creamy avocado paired with the nutty, spiced crunch of dukkah was such a satisfying start to the day.

Other local favorites include:

  • Croissants – Buttery, flaky, and gone in seconds.
  • Canelé – A caramelized shell with a custardy interior. Perfect with coffee.
  • Quiche – Rich, savory, and part of their breakfast set.
  • Lunch courses – If you come later in the day, they do beautiful plated lunches for around ¥3,000.

On the official website, you can even reserve certain breads for pickup—but it’s limited to one per person, which tells you just how popular some items are. Breakfast sets are just under ¥2,000, and honestly, it’s worth every yen for the quality and the vibe.

Tips for Visitors

Inside Hirami Pan
  • Go early – Popular items sell out fast, and mornings are the best time to avoid long waits.
  • Mind your group size – This isn’t the place for a 20-person breakfast reunion.
  • Takeaway bread – Even if you don’t sit in, their artisanal loaves make great edible souvenirs.
  • Bring cash or card – They accept both, but it’s always good to have options.
