Move Complete! Tokyo Past 3 is Now Self-Hosted

Whew. That took a while.

In my last post, I mentioned that Tokyo Past 3 is moving servers, and after what felt like a month, the blog has now settled in its brand new servers. In reality, it took only 10 days, but anxiety kicked in hard.

For my fellow bloggers out there who are on free WordPress.com and are considering moving to .org, I have two important tips:

Transfer your domain first.

This takes days! In my case, I thought I’d pretty up the self-hosted site before I make the final transfer, but this was not a good idea. Domains take a while to move and without your domain, you won’t be able to connect your site to Analytics or Console. Publishing new posts would also look weird because they’d be under a temporary domain name, which makes it look dodgy.

Chat support is your anti-drug

Both Bluehost and WordPress offer chat support, and the customer service agents are wonderful! Bluehost helped me import my content to the new servers. The file size was big so when I did it myself, I ended up losing most of my media library. WordPress, on the other hand, helped me keep track of my domain transfer and also helped me transfer my subscribers. Without their help, I’d probably have been consumed by anxiety and frustration.

Now that the move is complete, I can focus on what I love most: creating content. There are so many things I’m excited to write/make videos about, and I hope you continue to support Tokyo Past 3 from hereon.

Cheers!
