If you’re looking for a cherry blossom experience in Tokyo that’s a little more magical and a lot less crowded, mark your calendar for March 27–29, 2025. For just three nights, Yasukuni Shrine in Chiyoda Ward will host its much-anticipated Yozakura Mode (夜桜詣)—a rare chance to see the shrine grounds bathed in soft light and framed by blooming sakura under the night sky.
What Is Yozakura Mōde?
Held from 6 PM to 8 PM each evening, Yozakura Mode (Night Sakura Pilgrimage) offers visitors a chance to admire Yasukuni Shrine’s famous cherry blossoms in a completely different light—literally. Normally closed at night, the shrine’s imposing Shinmon gate will be specially opened, revealing a breathtaking scene of illuminated cherry trees and the solemn shrine buildings beyond.
The inner sanctuary remains off-limits, but even from the gate, the sight is unforgettable: hundreds of sakura trees glowing against the backdrop of one of Tokyo’s most historical and serene settings. It’s quiet, respectful, and absolutely stunning—a far cry from the rowdy hanami scenes you’ll find in Tokyo’s big parks.
Why Yasukuni Shrine Is a Cherry Blossom Hotspot
Yasukuni Shrine has long been one of Tokyo’s most beloved sakura spots. With around 500 cherry trees—including classic Somei Yoshino, weeping sakura, and early-blooming Kawazu-zakura—the grounds turn into a sea of soft pink petals each spring.
It’s also home to the official sample tree used by the Japan Meteorological Agency to declare the start of cherry blossom season in Tokyo. So when these trees bloom, you know it’s really spring.
Don’t miss the scenic spots near the Yūshūkan Museum and the Shinchi-teien garden, where the cherry blossoms reflect beautifully on the water.

Grand Sumo Dedication
On April 14, sumo wrestlers from the Japan Sumo Association will perform in a rare outdoor event held right on the shrine’s sumo ring. Watch the rituals, hear sumo songs, and even enjoy comic demonstrations of banned moves. It’s free to attend and full of character.
