Get Your Flaming Shaved Ice at Cafe Lumiere

Kakigori or shaved ice is a beloved dessert in Japan, especially during the hot summer. It comes in different flavors and specialty shops often compete in creating bold flavors and eye-catching aesthetics. One such cafe can be found in Kichijoji. The name? Cafe Lumiere. Their signature dish? Flaming shaved ice.

Cafe Lumiere calls this dish “yakigōri,” a portmanteau of the words “yaki” (to grill) and “k̄ori” (ice.) The desert is covered in a thick exterior of meringue which is flambéed in rum upon serving. As you dig in, you’ll find shaved ice layered with different ingredients such as fruits and cheese—these, of course, depend on the flavor you choose. The shaved ice is also served with fruit syrup, condensed milk, and fruit jam on the side, which add extra flavors to the mix.

With such a striking presentation, Cafe Lumiere is a standout among the kakigori shops in Tokyo. Although I do have to say that it feels like you eat more meringue than shaved ice when you order the yakigori. It is, without a doubt, a delicious treat, but people who are looking for the refreshing kick shaved ice brings might find it a bit lacking.

Thankfully, Cafe Lumiere also serves regular shaved ice without the flames, so you can try different takes on the popular dessert when you visit. You’ll also find hearty meals on their menu. Reservations are recommended though; this cafe can get crowded even on weekdays.
