What if I told you there’s a cycling road in Japan where love is said to bloom? Welcome to Ishioka City in Ibaraki Prefecture, a hidden gem packed with history, stunning countryside views, and unique adventures. My latest YouTube video takes you on a cycling journey through this charming city, uncovering its fascinating past and scenic wonders.
Ibaraki: Japan’s Most Underrated Prefecture?
It’s no secret that Ibaraki often finds itself at the bottom of the rankings for Japan’s most attractive prefectures. But as I discovered in Ishioka, this region has plenty to offer for those who know where to look.
Once the provincial capital of Hitachi during the Nara period, Ishioka is steeped in history. From ancient ruins to unique local traditions, it’s the perfect destination for slow, mindful travel—and a cycling adventure you won’t forget.
Highlights of the Journey
In the video, I take you through some of Ishioka’s most interesting spots:
1. Kokubunji Ruins
Over 1,300 years ago, the Hitachi Kokubunji temple was built as part of a network of temples to combat a devastating smallpox epidemic. Though the original structure is long gone, its foundations remain, telling a story of resilience and healing during a turbulent time in Japan’s history.
2. Kanban Kenchiku on Nakamachi-dori
Ishioka’s unique architecture is a testament to its recovery from a catastrophic fire in 1929. Known as Kanban Kenchiku, these fire-resistant buildings feature stunning Art Deco and neoclassical details, blending safety with beauty. A stroll down Nakamachi-dori reveals 34 of these historical gems, each with its own story to tell.
3. Hitachi-no-Kuni Soshagu Shrine
This shrine is a spiritual hub with a fascinating connection to legendary manga artist Tezuka Osamu. With charms and prayer plaques inspired by his works, it’s a blend of ancient tradition and modern pop culture.
4. Koisegawa Cycling Road: The Road of Love
Stretching 17 kilometers, this narrow cycling path is the heart of Ishioka’s romantic legend. They say love blooms on this intimate ride, where two cyclists can barely pass each other. Even if you’re skeptical of the legend, the road’s charm and scenic beauty will leave you smiling.
5. Mt. Ashio and Sports Bus Convenience
Cycling up Mt. Ashio isn’t for the faint of heart, but Ishioka has a solution: sports buses equipped to carry bikes. This makes the route accessible to groups with different fitness levels and ensures everyone can enjoy the adventure.
6. Yasato Distillery
Whisky lovers, rejoice! The Yasato Distillery Visitor Center offers tours, tastings, and pairings with locally produced smoked ham. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to unwind after a day of cycling.
7. Ibaraki Flower Park
The perfect way to end the day, this park is known for its seasonal blooms and hands-on Hiuchi-ishi Experience, where you learn the traditional art of fire-starting using flint stones.
Why Visit Ishioka?
Ishioka isn’t just about its sights—it’s about the experience. Whether you’re cycling along the Koisegawa Cycling Road, exploring historical ruins, or savoring local soba at a traditional farmhouse, Ishioka offers a slower, more meaningful way to connect with Japan.
