Fukuoka to Launch “Yatai Train” This November — A Subway Celebration of Street Food Culture

Fukuoka is bringing its beloved yatai (open-air food stalls) culture to the subway — and it’s shaping up to be one of the city’s most creative projects yet. Starting November 1, 2025, the Fukuoka City Subway will launch the “Yatai Train,” a special themed train celebrating the heart of Fukuoka’s food scene. It’ll run until November 21 on the Airport Line and Hakozaki Line.

The Concept

The idea behind the Yatai Train is simple but brilliant: take one of Fukuoka’s everyday subway trains and turn it into a moving tribute to yatai culture. According to the city’s announcement, the entire six-car train will be wrapped inside and out with yatai-themed designs — giving commuters the feeling of stepping into a gourmet magazine on rails.

Inside, the campaign will feature 27 yatai owners from Fukuoka’s three famous food-stall areas — Tenjin, Nakasu, and Nagahama — each sharing short comments and personal stories. It’s meant to celebrate the people behind these night-time stalls, whose warmth and craftsmanship make Fukuoka’s food culture so special.

Adding to the charm, local personalities Gori Ken and Yumi Takaki — both known as regular yatai-goers — will appear as “messengers” for the project. They’ll be featured in on-train visuals showing their visits to real stalls, giving the campaign a warm, relatable touch.

“My Street Food, My Style”

The project’s slogan, “my屋台を、持とう (My Street Food, My Style)” invites locals and visitors alike to embrace yatai culture in their own way — to find their favorite stalls, share recommendations, and keep this Fukuoka tradition alive. A 2023 city survey found that nearly half of yatai visitors first heard about them through local recommendations, so the campaign builds on that community spirit by turning the subway into a playful, moving showcase of local pride.

How to Catch the Yatai Train

If you’re visiting Fukuoka in November, keep an eye out for this one-of-a-kind train.

  • 🍜 Operation period: November 1–21, 2025
  • 🚉 Lines: Airport Line & Hakozaki Line
  • 🕐 Schedules vary daily, so check announcements or ask station staff if you want to catch it for photos.
  • 📸 No food onboard — it’s more of a visual showcase than a “ride-and-dine” service.

And of course, after spotting the train, it’s worth heading to Tenjin, Nakasu, or Nagahama to experience the real thing.

Why It’s a Fun Idea

Even without stepping inside yet, I love how this concept blends everyday life with local pride. It turns a simple subway ride into a moving celebration of what makes Fukuoka special: its food, its people, and its warmth.

Fukuoka’s yatai scene was one of my favorite highlights when I visited the prefecture — the smoky ramen stalls, the cheerful buzz of locals, and that sense of community you only find when everyone’s gathered around a tiny counter. And as someone who’s a bit of a train nerd, this project ticks all the boxes for me. It’s playful, nostalgic, and full of local charm — the kind of idea that makes you want to hop on board just to see it in person.
